In the I.T world, we are constantly getting feedback from systems, via dashboards, emails, or apps and these provide us with vital information on how to optimise to perform better. As human beings, this can be slightly more tricky. Yes, we can have watches and apps that tell us how many calories we have burnt and how many steps we have taken and even how well we have slept, but is that really giving us any insight into our real health?

As a coach one of the number one issues I see on a daily basis is guessing. People like to “guess” what they should be doing, what is right for them, what they should be eating, the list goes on. This generally isn’t based on facts, its based on the media, YouTube, Instagram, magazines, or celebrity fad diet. Yes, in some cases people get great results and feel better, but with the majority of people I work with are in a constant state of guessing which creates havoc on their health and mental state. Guessing is not only time consuming it creates unnecessary stress on your mind and body.

This leads to:

  • Never feeling happy with yourself - you look in the mirror and don't like what you see.

  • Low body confidence - you hate getting underdressed or feel like you don't want to be seen in fitted clothes.

  • Metabolic regulation problems (your body stops burning fuel at the right level) - so even eating small amounts of food can cause weight gain.

  • Energy issues (up and down) - you never know how your body is going to feel after food.

  • Low self-esteem - you feel inadequate to deal with situations at work and at home.

  • Brain fog - fuzzy thinking or lack of direction with your thoughts.

  • Brain drain – you spend too much time guessing you have no time to focus. This wastes time at work and time at home.

  • Weight gain – Yes! You actually put on weight due to the stress of thinking about losing it. Unnecessary stress creates so much tension in your body you create a cascade of stress hormones which stops fat burning.

This is the key to any transformation. Running lab tests on your self is CRUCIAL. You CANNOT optimise your self if you DON’T know where to start. Having a starting point is how you make good decisions. Everybody no matter what has their own unique biology and by looking at data we can focus on CAUSES of problems rather than focusing on SYMPTOMS.

When looking at your body the first point to start optimising your self is a deep dive into your hormones. If your hormones are not functioning correctly your body and brain will never run optimally. It's like having a slow processor and trying to multi-task – eventually, things fall over.

  • You can then look at:

  • Gut function – are you processing your food correctly?

  • What should you be eating?

  • What does your body hate and what does it like?

  • Stress levels – do you have adrenal issues?

  • What does your body need to assist it with your lifestyle?

Only once you have done this groundwork can you then start to reap the benefits of your body running well:

  • More energy – you can face the day with plenty of energy at work and for your family

  • Focus – your brain is running optimally so it is able to focus

  • Reserve – when your body is running well you build up what is known as a vital reserve. This means when a stressful situation comes along you can handle it and dip into your reserve.

  • Resilience – The healthier you are the more resilient your body becomes. Think of it like a kick ass firewall. Nothing can hack you or break your defences when you are strong.

  • Power – As you have plenty of energy and backup reserve your body is capable of so much more. If you are into sport, lifting, any training you will see significant improvements in your power output.

  • Weight loss – without trying, when everything is in balance your body will lose those extra pounds. Fat accumulation or gut inflammation is a sign that your body isn’t running well due to an unwanted stressor.

So, you can see data is key to not only the I.T world but for maximum human potential. This is the starting point for not just performing well, but performing at your best.
